A Message from the Dean of the Faculty of Law...

REORGANIZATION OF HEALTH LAW INSTITUTE

In the spring of 2012, I asked a Review Committee to conduct a review of the Health Law Institute in accordance with the University's Centres and Institutes Policy and its associated Operating Procedure. The Review Committee was composed of Dr. Russell Brown as Chair, Dr. Joanna Harrington and Professor Gerald Robertson.  The Review Committee consulted with people interested in the success of the Institute, and on June 29 the Committee provided me its unanimous report and recommendations.

The basic thrust of the Committee's recommendations was that the Institute should be reorganized to change the focus of its activities to facilitate and provide support for research conducted by professors in the Faculty of Law, and the role of the Executive Director should be restructured to accomplish this goal.  I would like to thank the members of the Review Committee for their efforts.

Since receiving the Review Committee's report I have engaged in a number of my own consultations with people interested in the health law field, including the Institute's Board and the Institute's Executive Director, Tracey Bailey.  After careful consideration, I have decided to accept the Review Committee's advice.

I had hoped that Tracey Bailey would continue acting as Executive Director, albeit with a different mandate. However, I regret to announce that as a result of this change in direction, Ms. Bailey has elected to pursue other areas of interest and will be stepping down as Executive Director of the Health Law Institute effective immediately. Ms. Bailey has worked with the Health Law Institute since 2001 and has been the Institute's Executive Director since 2003.  I would like to thank her for her substantial contribution to the Institute's accomplishments during that time, and wish her every success in her future endeavours.

The Institute will continue its operations and I will be working with the Board’s Interim Chair, Professor Steven Penney, along with other members of the Faculty of Law, to put together a more detailed plan for implementing the Review Committee's recommendations.
